A Different Kind of Choir Schedule -- This Is the Year for You to Sing!

Have you ever--even briefly or flippantly--considered joining the choir? (If yes, keep reading...)

Are you worried about the long-term commitment? Do you struggle to find extra time between work and family responsibilities? (If yes, keep reading...)

Your concerns have not gone unnoticed. The choir and I have discussed this problem and decided to try out a different kind of rehearsal schedule. This new, flexible choir schedule builds in opportunities for both participation and breaks.

Before I explain the schedule, I want to emphasize why choir matters. We believe at FPC that community music-making is transformational. When you lead from the choir (or in any musical way), you are…

  • Teaching our faith to others

  • Inspiring discipleship in the world

  • Building a supportive community

  • Challenging closed mindsets

  • Speaking up for the silent or silenced

  • Comforting the suffering

  • Growing our critical listening muscles

  • And more…

Why does choir matter to you? If you can think of even one reason, please consider singing with us, or contributing your musical talents to worship in some way. Here’s how you can get involved:

SIGN UP for one month of choir--4 weeks only--starting in September. After the four weeks are over, you can choose to sign up for October (and so on), or not! Maybe you decide choir is not for you, or maybe you will be too busy during that next month. We understand and want to give you the flexibility you need. It is OK if you must miss a practice or performance during the 4 week period, but do try to attend as much of the month as possible, both for your own enrichment and in support of other choir members.

So let me explain how the first period works... We will meet on Wednesday, Sept. 1, at 7:00 p.m. in the choir room for “September Choir Kickoff”. We will hang out, have snacks, and read through some music for the upcoming weeks. The following Sunday, Sept. 5, we will not perform. Instead, we will invite a soloist to sing special music. At the next 7:00 gathering on Wednesday, Sept. 8, we will rehearse a bit more seriously with the intention of performing a piece that Sunday. During the remainder of September, we will rehearse on Wednesdays as usual and sing prepared pieces for Sunday worship. Your September rehearsal commitment will conclude on Sunday the 26th.

If this new format works out well for people, we will keep it up throughout the fall! If not, we will keep brainstorming ways to invite you all into music-making with us.

Now don’t forget to SIGN UP for September! We hope to see you at the Kick Off on Wednesday, Sept. 1, at 7:00 p.m. Please connect with me via email or phone (find info on Realm or through the church office) if you have any questions or suggestions. Whether you sit in the chancel or the pews, we implore you to sing for church transformation!

Blessings,

Hannah Cruse, Music Director & Accompanist, FPC
