Christmas Joy Special Offering on Dec. 19

Image
When we give to the Christmas Joy Offering, we share our love with the leaders of our Church--past, present, and future--who point us to God. 50% of your gifts provide assistance for current and retired church workers and their families with critical financial needs. The Christmas Joy Offering opens doors which lead to relief for church workers and their families when emergency needs arise. $1.2 million received from the 2020 Christmas Joy Offering provided relief to 652 households through the Board of Pensions.  50% of your gifts support Presbyterian-related schools and colleges equipping communities of color. The Christmas Joy Offering opens doors of opportunity for students to learn and grow in faith to be the leaders in our Church and world. $1.1 million of gifts from the 2020 Christmas Joy Offering are being used to provide education and leadership development skills for our future leaders of color. In worship on December 19, an envelope will be provided in your bulletin. If you

The Christmas season can be a time of deep sadness and loneliness for those who feel cut off from the general feeling of joy and happiness typically associated with this time of year. This feeling of loss may result from the death of a loved one, divorce, illness, job loss, or any number of other reasons. This Sunday morning, we will hear the good news about a peace that surpasses all understanding--a source of comfort that is substantial enough to sustain us during the most difficult times of life. A man who needs no introduction in our congregation, Leo Adames, will share his beautiful song, "Crossing Bridges," during the offertory time. He wrote this in 2015 in memory of beloved member,  Heidi Kathleen Hedstrom (1992-2015). In the poem, there are subtle conversations and references to a spiritual connection. It is a passage of where we’ve been, where we are, and where we’re going. It has touches of emotional conflict, of acceptance, of release interwoven with hope and the

Christmas Food Baskets - Help Us Pack!

Image
Join the Service Committee on Saturday, Dec. 18 at 9:00 a.m. to help feed families of Liberty Elementary School this Christmas! We will pack boxes of food in Fellowship Hall and then deliver the boxes that afternoon . We are asking volunteers to bring a bag of apples and a bag of oranges (which can be taken to Fellowship Hall anytime this week). Any size bag and any size fruit will do, as we prepare baskets for various size families with and without children. This event is a great service opportunity for your whole family. Children and youth deliver the cans and packages of food to adults who fill the boxes to be delivered. It is a time of fun, while sharing God’s love with our community! Please join us to pack and/or deliver baskets. For more information, contact Sara Little.

Music Spotlight! (Dec. 5, 2021)

Notice this Sunday that the Prelude ( In dulci jubilo, BWV 751 by J. S. Bach ) and Postlude ( In dulci jubilo, BWV 729 by J. S. Bach ) bear the same title and composer. These are two separate pieces inspired by the same melody! Bach often wrote multiple tune settings--some easier or more difficult, some triumphant or reserved, some shorter or longer--for the wide range of musical needs from the organ in Lutheran worship.  Late 1800's setting of In dulci jubilo [Hymnary.org] In dulci jubilo,  meaning "In sweet jubilation," is a 14th-century German melody . The original song is a bit unusual because it "was in two languages—Latin and German. The technical term for this is macaronic , meaning Latin plus the vernacular language." Secular tunes like this would not have been sung during the Roman Catholic liturgy, for several reasons. Vernacular languages, dance rhythms, and secular instrumentations were not allowed in medieval worship. [ Source ] The tune was picked
